Verti-mowing (also called scarifying) uses vertical blades to cut down into the thatch layer of your lawn and remove built-up organic material. In Perth, warm-season grasses like couch, kikuyu and buffalo quickly develop a thick thatch layer which prevents water, air and nutrients from getting to the roots. Carefully timed verti-mowing opens up the canopy, encourages new growth from the stolons and rhizomes, and creates a denser, more even surface. It's a key part of most renovation programs.

For most Perth warm-season lawns, renovation and verti-mowing are best carried out in the warmer growing months when the turf can recover quickly — typically from late spring through early autumn, depending on weather.
